Indications

Pulmicort Flexhaler is a steroid medication used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children over the age of 6.

Budesonide is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in your airways that may lead to bronchoconstriction by binding to glucocorticoid receptors and budesonide-receptor complex. This inhibitory action also reduces cytokine formation to reduce airway inflammation and hyperactivity. All these actions allow Pulmicort Flexhaler to improve airway function and prevent asthma attacks.

This asthma medication is an effective form of treatment to prevent bronchospasms and asthma attacks in both children and adults. Pulmicort Flexhaler has been proven to lower asthma exacerbation with a low incidence of adverse events. This allows the inhaler medication to treat children as well as adults.

Uses and Dosage

The dose and administration of Pulmicort Flexhaler will vary depending on the individual being treated. Follow your doctor’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully for the best results.

  • Before your first use, prime the inhaler
  • Only use the inhaler device that comes with your Pulmicort Flexhaler
  • Most adults start by inhaling 360mcg twice daily
  • Some may only need 180mcg twice daily, but doses should not exceed 720mcg twice a day
  • Children aged 6 to 17 tend to start by inhaling 180mcg twice daily
  • Children should not take more than 360mcg twice a day
  • After use, rinse your mouth with water to prevent thrush
  • Once asthma has stabilized, doses should decrease to the lowest effective dose needed
  • Asthma control should improve within 24 hours, but the inhaler may take 1 to 2 weeks to provide its maximum benefit
  • Do not allow a young child to use Pulmicort Flexhaler without help
  • Contact your doctor if symptoms do not improve or if they worsen
  • Do not submerge the inhaler in water or take it apart
  • Store at room temperature away from moisture, light, and heat
  • Keep the cover on your inhaler when not in use

Cautions

Pulmicort Flexhaler is not a rescue medicine and will not treat an asthma attack that has already begun. Budesonide is prescribed to help prevent bronchospasm attacks, but another rescue inhaler should be used to treat active attacks.

Avoid getting Pulmicort Flexhaler mist in your eyes. If contact occurs, rinse your eyes with water right away.

Avoid being near people who are sick or infected. Budesonide and other steroids can make you more susceptible to becoming infected. Tell your doctor if you are exposed to chickenpox or measles to receive preventative treatment because these conditions can be fatal for steroid medicine users.

Before using Pulmicort Flexhaler, tell your doctor if you have ever had any of the following:

  • Food or drug allergies
  • Liver disease
  • Osteoporosis or low bone mineral density
  • Glaucoma, cataracts, or herpes infection in your eyes
  • Tuberculosis
  • Any bacterial, fungal, viral, or parasitic infection

Using steroid medications for long-term treatment may lead to bone loss, especially if you smoke, do not exercise, do not get enough vitamin D or calcium, have a history of osteoporosis, or if you are going through menopause.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using Pulmicort Flexhaler.

Some drugs may interact with budesonide and cause adverse reactions. To avoid this, tell your doctor about all the medications that you take, including over the counter medicines, but especially any of the following:

  • Antifungal medicine
  • Immunosuppressive medications
  • Seizure medication
  • Other steroid medicines
