Indications

Silenor is an antidepressant medication used to treat insomnia.

Doxepin hydrochloride is a tricyclic antidepressant that binds to histamine receptors and inhibits their activity. This action may allow Silenor to improve your ability to stay asleep and combat insomnia.

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Silenor that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual being treated. Follow all directions offered from your healthcare provider and read packaging instructions to ensure the best results. Do not change your dose or stop this medication on your own.

  • Swallow tablets whole
  • Take 30 minutes before bed
  • Take at least 3 hours after eating
  • Only perform tasks and activities necessary for preparing yourself to sleep after your dose
  • Most adults take 6mg once a day
  • Elderly patients should start by taking 3mg once daily before gradually increasing to 6mg daily if needed and tolerated
  • Do not take more than 6mg a day
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

  • Nausea
  • Cold symptoms (stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat)

Some Silenor users have been reported performing activities while not fully conscious and have no later memories of doing so. These activities may include walking, driving, or calling people on the phone. Speak with your healthcare provider right away if any similar instances occur.

Allergic Reactions

Do not use Silenor if you are allergic to Doxepin HCL or any of the other tablet ingredients. If you develop signs of an allergic reaction, stop taking this medication and contact your healthcare provider.

  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat

Cautions

Some Silenor users have gotten out of bed to perform an activity while not fully awake and have no recollection of doing so the next morning. These activities may include driving, making and eating food, making phone calls, having sex, or sleepwalking. Your risk of doing these activities while not fully conscious may increase if you drink alcohol or take other medications that cause sleepiness.

Do not take Silenor if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAO) inhibitor medication within the last 14 days to avoid a drug interaction.

Do not use Silenor if you have untreated narrow angle glaucoma or severe difficulties urinating.

To ensure your safety when taking Silenor, tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had any of the following:

  • History of depression, mental illness, suicidal thoughts
  • Severe sleep apnea
  • Kidney or liver problems
  • History of drug or alcohol abuse or dependence

Do not drink alcohol or take any medications that cause you to become dizzy or drowsy because they can increase these reactions caused by Silenor.

Do not drive or perform any dangerous activities after taking a dose of Silenor. The medication may make you feel sleepy the following day after taking it; do not drive or perform hazardous activities until you feel fully awake.

Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Newborns may develop sedation symptoms including breathing problems, sluggishness, low muscle tone, feeding issues, and withdrawal symptoms if Silenor and other similar medicines are taking during the third trimester. Do not stop taking Silenor without speaking with your healthcare provider.

Do not breastfeed while taking Silenor because it can pass into your breast milk and may cause harm to your baby.

Some drugs may interact with Silenor and cause adverse reactions. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medications that you take, including over the counter medicines, but especially any of the following:

  • Certain allergy medications
  • Medicines that cause drowsiness or affect your breathing
  • Cimetidine
  • Tolazamide
  • Sertraline

Ask your healthcare provider before using any medications that cause drowsiness because they can worsen this effect created by Silenor. These drugs include opioid medications, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medication for anxiety or seizures.
