Indications

Stelazine is an antipsychotic medication used to treat anxiety and schizophrenia symptoms. The medication may also be used to treat nausea and vomiting.

Trifluoperazine is a phenothiazine antipsychotic that decreases the effect of dopamine in your brain to balance and regulate your brain cell activity. These actions allow Stelazine to manage, prevent, and treat symptoms related to schizophrenia and anxiety as well as nausea and vomiting when used long or short term.

Dosage and Administration

The dose and administration regimen of Stelazine that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual and mental issue being treated. Follow all your healthcare provider’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully to ensure the best results. Do not change your dose or take it for a different length of time than that prescribed on your own.

  • Swallow tablet whole with water
  • Take your doses at the same times each day
  • Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest amount of time needed for desired results
  • Stelazine usually takes full effect within 2 to 3 weeks of treatment
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

To treat anxiety:

  • Most adults start by taking 1 to 2mg twice daily
  • Maintenance doses range up to 6mg a day for up to 12 weeks

To treat schizophrenia:

  • Adults start by taking 2 to 5mg twice daily
  • Most adults increase their doses to 15 to 20mg daily
  • Adults should not take more than 40mg each day
  • Children aged 6 to 12 should start by taking 1mg once or twice a day before increasing up to 15mg daily depending on tolerability
  • Children over 12 can start by taking 2 to 5mg twice a day before increasing up to 20mg daily

FAQ

What precautions should be taken when taking Stelazine?

You should be careful when going outdoors during treatment with Stelazine because the medication can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Also take care to avoid alcohol, especially in large amounts, because it can increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and faintness. Because of these reactions that may occur when taking Stelazine, avoid driving or performing hazardous activities until you know how the medication affects you.

How long does it take for Stelazine to work?

Stelazine is easily absorbed into your body but may take some time for its effects on your dopamine and other brain chemicals to become visibly noticeable.
