Indications

Tekturna is a blood pressure medication used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) in people older than 6 years of age.

Aliskiren is a direct renin inhibitor that reduces the activity of renin and inhibits angiotensinogen from converting to Ang I, both of which add to hypertension. By affecting and inhibiting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (the system associated with causing high blood pressure levels), Tekturna helps lower and manage your blood pressure. This helps reduce your risk of developing serious cardiovascular issues.

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Tekturna will vary depending on the individual and severity of the hypertension being treated. Follow your healthcare provider’s directions and read packaging label instructions carefully for the best results. Do not change your dose or suddenly stop treatment on your own.

  • Swallow tablets whole
  • Take at the same time each day
  • Can be taken with or without food, but take the same way each time
  • Most adults start by taking 150mg once daily
  • If needed, doses can increase up to 300mg once a day
  • Ask your healthcare provider before administering Tekturna to children
  • Continue taking Tekturna as prescribed, even if you feel well
  • The medication may take up to 2 weeks of treatment to provide its full effects
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

Serious Side Effects

Some more serious adverse reactions may occur when taking Tekturna. Stop using this medication and contact your healthcare provider if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Light-headedness, feeling faint
  • Kidney problems (swelling, urinating less, tiredness, shortness of breath)
  • High blood potassium (nausea, weakness, tingling, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, loss of movement)

Allergic Reactions

Do not take Tekturna if you are allergic to Aliskiren or any of the other tablet ingredients. If you notice signs of an allergic reaction, stop using this medication and contact your healthcare provider right away.

Tekturna allergy symptoms may include:

  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat

Cautions

Do not take Tekturna if you are pregnant because the medication may cause complications in you and your child. Stop taking Tekturna if you become pregnant and contact your healthcare provider right away.

If you have diabetes, do not use Tekturna with angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) because this combination will increase your risk of kidney failure, high potassium levels, and low blood pressure.

To ensure your safety when taking Tekturna, tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had any of the following:

  • Allergic reaction to any blood pressure medications
  • Heart problems
  • Diabetes
  • If you follow a low-salt diet
  • Kidney disease or if you are on dialysis

If you take your daily dose of Tekturna with a meal, avoid eating foods that are high in fat because they can make it harder for your body to fully absorb the medication.

Do not breastfeed during treatment with Tekturna.

You can more easily become dehydrated when taking Tekturna. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience ongoing vomiting or diarrhea or if you find you are sweating more than usual. Dehydration can lead to dangerously low blood pressure, an electrolyte imbalance, or kidney failure.

Avoid taking potassium supplements or using potassium salt substitutes during treatment unless directed to do so by your doctor because Tekturna can cause an increase in your potassium levels.

Move slowly when standing from a seated or laying position to avoid becoming dizzy.

Some drugs may interact with Tekturna and cause adverse reactions. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including over the counter medicines, but especially any of the following:

  • Other heart or blood pressure medications
  • Cyclosporine
  • Itraconazole
  • Diuretic medicines
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and others)

Tekturna is not an approved treatment for any child under the age of six or those 6 years and older who weigh less than 20kg.

Do not administer Tekturna to any child younger than 2 years of age.

FAQ

What precautions should be taken when taking Tekturna?

You should avoid eating meals that are high in fat if you take your daily dose of Tekturna with food. Doing so can make it harder for your body to fully absorb the medication which can decrease its effectiveness. Also avoid using salt substitutes that contain potassium or potassium supplements without consulting your healthcare provider because Tekturna can cause your potassium levels to increase.

What should not be administered concurrently with Tekturna?

During treatment with Tekturna, you should avoid taking any ACE inhibitors or ARBs, especially if you have diabetes. The combination of these types of drugs could lead to dangerously low blood pressure levels. Speak with your healthcare provider and tell them about all the medications you take to avoid any unwanted drug reactions.
