Description

What is Xifaxan

Chemical name: Rifaximin

Xifaximin is a rifamycin-based non-systemic antibiotic used to treat gastrointestinal bacterial infections such as traveler’s diarrhea caused by E.coli.  It should not be used in those with a fever or bloody diarrhea. This antibiotic treats bacterial infections only and will not work for viral infections such as the common cold and flu.

Directions:

Read the Patient Information Leaflet provided and if you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. The dosage is determined by the severity of your medical condition and your response to treatment. To treat travel’s diarrhea, take the medication by mouth with or without food as would be directed by your doctor. It is taken usually 3 times a day, at regular intervals, for 3 days. A helpful way to not forget is to take the medication at the same time each day.

For traveler’s diarrhea, take Xifaxan until the full prescribed amount is completed, even if symptoms disappear after a couple of days. Stopping the medication early may result in a return of the infection.

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, and if it is near the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose. The next dose should be then taken at the regular time. Do not double your dose to catch up for any missed doses. This medication should be stored at room temperature and away from any heat, light, and moisture.

Side effects:

With safety criteria becoming increasingly important, non-systemic drugs offer the great advantage of minimizing off-target systemic effects.  It is not absorbed into the body, which means that they greatly reduce the risks of drug-drug interactions, toxicity, and side effects.

Side effects may include flatulence, headache, nausea, constipation, and abdominal pain. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop persistent diarrhea, a high temperature, or blood in your stool. It is rare to have serious allergic reactions to Xifaxan.

Price: Why is Xifaxan so expensive

This medication is largely an expensive drug at other retailers. The reason why Xifaxan price is so expensive is predominantly due to the lack of generic alternatives and competition in drug production. In addition, the expensive costs of researching, developing, and marketing brand products are highly costly.

Alternatively, when you check with drug price comparison sites, their Xifaxan cost prices are all at least double ours, for the exact same product.
