What is Advair Diskus?

Advair Diskus is a multi-dose powder inhaler containing Fluticasone propionate/salmeterol as the active ingredients. Fluticasone and salmeterol work together to prevent asthma symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath; it is also prescribed to relieve breathing problems in COPD chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases associated with bronchitis and emphysema. Salmeterol is a long-acting beta-agonist that relaxes the muscle around the airways to open up and makes it easy to breathe. At the same time, fluticasone is a corticosteroid that reduces the swelling and inflammation of the airways.

This inhaler relaxes the muscles in the airways to improve breathing problems in asthma or COPD and prevent flare-ups and worsening COPD. This inhaled corticosteroid does not increase the risk of serious asthma-related breathing problems.

How to use Advair Diskus

Advair Diskus comes as a powder medicine in a foil blister strip; it is inhaled through the inhaler, and breath should be held for at least 10 seconds.  There is an indicator in the inhaler to tell you how much dose is left; keep the inhaler close after each use. Gargle and rinse your mouth with water after each use to prevent irritation and yeast infection in the mouth and throat. You need to follow some reminders, such as: Not to breathe out in the inhaler, not to remove any parts of the inhaler, and not wash any parts of the inhaler; keep it dry and store in a dry place.

Advair Diskus Dosage

Advair Diskus comes in 500mcg/50mcg, 250mcg/50mcg, and 100mcg/5mcg strengths; it is inhaled twice a day, one in the morning and one in the evening with a 12 hours interval. If you are using another inhaler, allow a one-minute interval before using each inhaler. Make sure to tell your doctor or pharmacist all the medicine you are currently taking to avoid drug interactions.

Advair Diskus should not be used as a reliever when asthma attacks on the spot; use a quick-relief inhaler instead. Each prescription differs based on the medical condition, age, taking other medicines, and response to treatment; the dose listed here is the usual prescription, but be sure to follow how your medication is instructed. Adult’s and children’s dose start based on the severity of the condition and is gradually adjusted over time until the least dose provides the desired effect. Adults are prescribed 250mcg/50mcg twice a day, children 12 years old and above are given 100mcg/50mcg up to 500mcg/50mcg twice a day, and 4 years old to 11 years old are given 100mcg/50mcg twice a day.

Regular use of this inhaler at an evenly spaced time daily and at the same time of the day every day will help attain the most benefits of it; if a dose is missed, let it be and wait for the next time of use, do not double dose to catch up the missed dose.
