Indications

Synjardy XR is a blood sugar medication used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus and lower the risk of death from a heart attack, stroke, or heart failure in those who have heart disease as well as type 2 diabetes.

This diabetes medication combines empagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor, with metformin, a biguanide, to help lower your blood sugar levels. Empagliflozin promotes the excretion of glucose through your urine to lower levels while metformin decreases the amount of glucose your liver produces and reduces the amount of sugar that is absorbed into your blood after eating meals.

The metformin in Synjardy XR also supports the absorption of glucose from your blood to help prevent it from building into plaque in your blood vessels which can lead to cardiovascular issues.

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Synjardy XR that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual being treated. Follow all your healthcare provider’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully to ensure the best results during treatment.

  • Swallow tablets whole, do not crush or chew
  • Take with food in the morning
  • Most adults take 10mg of empagliflozin once daily
  • If needed, doses can increase to a maximum of 25mg of empagliflozin
  • Do not take more than 25mg of empagliflozin and 2,000mg of metformin each day

How to switch from other blood sugar medications:

  • When taking metformin, start taking Synjardy XR with a similar total daily dosage of metformin and 10mg of empagliflozin
  • When switching from empagliflozin, start taking Synjardy XR at a similar daily dosage with 1,000mg of metformin
  • If you are currently taking both empagliflozin and metformin, start taking Synjardy XR with the same total daily doses of each drug
