Indication : Alimta is a medication designed to interfere with the growth of cancer cells. This results in slower growth speed and and the ability for the cancer to spread in the body. Alimta is most commonly associated with the treatment of mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer that is often caused by exposure to asbestos.

Precaution : Avoid being around people with colds, the flu, or other contagious illnesses. Contact a doctor as soon as signs of infection arise. Remember to take your folic acid and vitamin B-12 supplements.

Warnings : Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or may become pregnant as Alimta can cause harm to an unborn baby. Because Alimta may lower the number of blood cells that fight infection stay away from anyone that shows signs of illness.

Patient Family Information  : Alimta is administered through a needle in the vein. You should receive the injection of Alimta in a clinic or hospital setting. While taking Alimta you must also take folic acid and vitamin B-12 supplements.

Contraindication : Do not take Alimta if you are allergic to pemetrexed. Also, tell your doctor if you: kidney disease; liver disease; bone marrow suppression; a weak immune system; or excess fluid in the space around your lung, liver, or other internal organs, including pleural effusion or ascites. Alimta can cause harm to an unborn baby. Let you doctor know if you are pregnant, or may become pregnant.

Sever Side Effects : Serious side effects include: allergic reaction; pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness; fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms; white patches or sores inside the mouth or on the lips; urinating less than usual, or not at all; chest pain, trouble breathing; swelling, rapid weight gain. Less serious side effects include: skin rash; numbness or tingling; depressed mood; sore throat; tired feeling; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, loss of appetite; or muscle pain.
