Description

How does Avodart work?

Avodart (dutasteride) is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor that blocks the enzymes responsible for the continuous growth of the prostate.

A key function of a hormone produced in the testicles called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is to send a signal to the brain that causes the body to build more tissue for the prostate gland. The male body seldom stops producing DHT on its own, which accounts for the unregulated growth of the prostate which leads to BPH.

Avodart works by halting the production of DHT. It achieves this by binding to the enzymes that convert the parent hormone testosterone into DHT. Without these enzymes functioning, the body is rendered unable to produce DHT, which prevents it from building new cells in the prostate.

Avodart generic name: Dutasteride

What are Avodart’s side effects?

Avodart medication can lead to erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, low sperm count, testicle pain and swelling, and breast tenderness.

Other side effects include: Dizziness, cardiac failure, breast cancer, depression, prostate cancer, skin rashes or itchy skin, swelling in the face, fainting, and shortness of breath. These symptoms are considered serious, and should immediately be brought to the attention of your doctor or a health care professional if experienced.

What is the correct Dosage?

The standard dose for Avodart 0.5 mg is one tablet per day at the same time of day. If your doctor prescribes a different dose, it is necessary to take Avodart according to the instructions based on their prescription.

For a missed dose: If it’s beyond halfway towards the next scheduled dosage, simply skip the missed dose and carry on normally. Do not take two doses to catch up.

An overdose may have occurred if Avodart causes difficulty breathing and intense fainting spells that may result in loss of consciousness. In such cases, immediately call a poison control center for assistance.

What is BPH?

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia, or BPH, is a non-cancerous prostate condition that is extremely common in aging men. BPH occurs when the prostate gland (located near the bladder and urinary tract) becomes so large that it begins to affect the urinary system and causes uncomfortable and painful symptoms.

In most men, the prostate gland undergoes continuous growth lasting well past their 50s, which often leads to BPH. In fact, BPH has been found to occur in over 50% of men over the age of 50. As the prostate grows, it increasingly puts pressure on the urethra. An enlarged prostate gland causes urinary blockages in moderate and severe cases, which in turn increases the risk of health complications.

What Are the Symptoms of BPH?

BPH can induce persistent feelings of an urgent need to urinate that is difficult to satiate. It can also lead to increased frequency of the need to urinate, especially at night, and difficulty or pain when starting to urinate. The urine stream can be weak, dribbling, and can become interrupted periodically.

What are the risks that come from BPH?

Because of the unhealthy conditions in the urinary systems that are caused by BPH, there are several conditions that can develop from BPH that have major health implications.

Urinary retention (the inability to urinate due to blockages) can cause prostate nerve damage, kidney damage, bladder damage, and can lead to hematuria (blood in urine), kidney/bladder stones, inflammation, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and in extreme cases, prostate cancer.

Contraindications:

Do not take Avodart if you are a pregnant or nursing woman, or are living with a pregnant woman or woman who is considering conceiving. Avodart can damage the female reproductive system and cause fetal damage, and can be absorbed through the skin; therefore, women are advised to be extremely careful when handling Avodart. Intercourse while taking Avodart carries the same implications. Additionally, it is prohibited to donate blood while taking Avodart to prevent pregnant women from receiving blood that may harm their babies. If you are worried about these risks, ask your doctor about how to stay safe.

If you experience skin rashes or dizziness, you may be having an allergic reaction to Dutasteride. Do not take Avodart if you have a hypersensitivity to alpha-reductase inhibitors, and talk to your doctor for prescription medications that are safe for you to use.

Dutasteride carries the risk of developing high grade prostate cancer in some patients. If you have a history of prostate cancer, speak with your doctor about whether or not it is safe for you to take Avodart.

While there are no known serious drug interactions, it is important to speak with your doctor or pharmacist for a complete list of drug interactions.
