Description

What is Dapsone?

Dapsone belongs to an antileprosy agent drugs sulfone; it inhibits the free radical formation with the help of neutrophils, a white blood cell that kills and digests bacteria and fungi to help the body fight, heal wounds and decrease inflammations. It is used to treat dermatitis herpetiform, a condition of intensive skin itchiness that causes blisters and bumps caused by intolerance to gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye). It is also prescribed together with other medication to treat Hansen’s disease or leprosy; this condition is an infection caused by a slow-moving bacterium called mycobacterium leprae that affects nerve skin, eye, and lining of the nose.

This works in these conditions by slowing down or stopping the growth of bacteria and decreasing inflammation. It can also be used in patients with a weak immune system due to pneumocystis jirovecii or fungal infection that causes inflammation and build-up of fluids in the lungs. This will not work in viral infections; unnecessary use of antibacterial may lessen the effect when needed in the future.

Dapsone Dosage

Dapsone is a prescription medicine based on the patient’s medical condition, another medication is taken, body response, age, and weight. It is available in the following strengths: Dapsone 100mg, 25mg, and50mg and should be taken at an evenly spaced time at the same time each day. It can be administered with or without food once daily, at your preferred time of the day. The usual start dose is 50mg, gradually increasing to 300mg; if symptoms are still not controlled, a higher amount may be tried with the advice of health professionals.

  • Leprosy – start dose is 50mg and can be increased to 100mg once a day.
  • Dermatitis Herpetiform – starting dose of 50mg to 300mg for teenagers to adults once a day and 2mg/kg for children once a day until symptoms are controlled before decreasing to the lowest to control symptoms.

A regular intake will help attain the best result, do not take less or more than prescribed, do not stop abruptly. In case of missing a dose, take once remembered unless nearing the following intake schedule; if it is, then allowing it to be missed and proceeding to the next intake schedule for double dosing is discouraged.

Medications for heartburn and stomach acid reduction should have at least two hours intervals with this prescription drug to prevent reduced effectiveness.

To reduce secondary Dapsone resistance, the recommended dose of lepromatous and borderline lepromatous patients is 100mg as uninterrupted maintenance daily co-administered with rifampin 600mg once a month for six months. Additional three years of maintenance for tuberculoid patients and five years for borderline tuberculoid. Lepromatous patients have widespread disease, and borderline lepromatous leprosy has an asymmetric bilaterally distributed lesion. Tuberculoid is a mild form of leprosy with a few bacteria in the skin and nerves, and borderline tuberculoid are skin lesions with satellite lesions around large lesions.
