Diovan (Valsartan) should be stored away from moisture and heat at room temperature.

Diovan (generic Valsartan) is a medication that is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) or heart failure. Diovan (Valsartan) is an angiotensin receptor antagonist and it keeps blood vessels from constricting which in turn lowers blood pressure, improves blood flow and reduces the risk of death after a heart attack.

Diovan (generic drug Valsartan) is used for the treatment of conditions affecting the cardiovascular. Diovan’s uses are intended for long term maintenance of health, prevention of cardiac deterioration, and preventing the development of heart disease.

Diovan is administered in tablet form and is meant to be taken routinely as prescribed by your doctor.

Treatment:

High Blood Pressure/Hypertension: Diovan is intended primarily for the treatment of hypertension. Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARB) such as Diovan is recommended as one of the best medications for hypertension.

Chronic Heart Failure: Diovan can be used in patients who suffer from chronic heart failure to ease symptoms and to reduce the risk of hospitalization or from developing additional heart diseases.

Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack): Diovan can be prescribed to reduce the risk of death after a heart attack.

Diovan dosage

Hypertension:

  • Initial dose: 80 mg once per day (gradually increased when necessary)
  • Maximum: 320 mg a day

Chronic Heart Failure:

  • Initial dose: 20 mg twice a day (increased if necessary)
  • Maximum: 160 mg twice a day

Myocardial Infarction:

  • Initial dose: 40 mg twice a day (gradually increased when necessary)
  • Maximum: 160 mg twice a day

Talk to your doctor for specifics about your dosage. It is necessary for some conditions to increase the dose for individuals on a case-by-case basis. Do not exceed the maximum dose and seek medical assistance immediately if you believe you have overdosed. In the event that you have missed a dose, carry on with the routine and take the next tablet at the appropriate time. Do not double dose.

How Does Diovan Work?

Diovan is an Angiotensin Receptor Blocker that works by preventing the neurotransmitter Angiotensin from interacting with its receptor sites. Angiotensin is responsible for telling the body when it should constrict and narrow the blood vessels. This is required to control the perfusion that regulates the pressurized flow of blood through blood vessels. When the blood pressure becomes too high, it becomes more difficult for the heart to distribute blood throughout the body, and it has to work harder to do so. This can lead to heart failure, myocardial infarction, and other heart diseases.

By blocking the angiotensin receptor sites will cause the blood vessels to relax and become wider, which decreases the pressure in the bloodstream. This makes it easier for the heart to pump blood, which is why Diovan is used for Chronic Heart Failure and after Myocardial Infarction.

Avoid getting up too fast from a lying or sitting position; rise up slowly to prevent dizziness.

While on Diovan (Valsartan), do not drink alcohol as it can negatively affect you. Also, do not use potassium or salt supplements or substitutes unless your doctor has told you to.

Follow your doctor’s orders and the prescription label instructions when taking Diovan (Valsartan). Do not take larger doses than recommended. You can take Diovan (Valsartan) with or without food and have your blood pressure checked on a regular basis. Schedule appointments with your doctor. Diovan (Valsartan) may take up to 4 weeks for symptoms to improve, keep taking this medication even you start feeling better.

Do not use Diovan (Valsartan) if you have a Valsartan allergy. Before using Diovan (Valsartan), inform your doctor if you have any of these issues: kidney disease; liver disease; congestive heart failure; or if you are dehydrated. Also, do not take Diovan (Valsartan) if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breast feeding.

Seek medication attention if you are having any of these serious Diovan (Valsartan) side effects: feeling like you might pass out; chest pain, fast or pounding heartbeats; numbness or tingly feeling; or swelling, weight gain.

Less serious Diovan (Valsartan) side effects include: runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough; back pain; diarrhea, constipation; dry mouth, stomach pain, loss of appetite; mild itching, skin rash; sleep problems (insomnia); headache, dizziness, anxiety; tired feeling; weakness; or impotence, loss of interest in sex, or trouble having an orgasm.

Get medication attention immediately if you experience any of these allergic reactions: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. In unusual cases, Diovan (Valsartan) can cause a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. Call your doctor right away if you have muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have fever, nausea or vomiting, and dark colored urine.
