Description

Durolane Injection

This medication contains a hyaluronic acid that acts like the natural hyaluronic acid found in the body. It is prescribed in patients with OA osteoarthritis, a degenerative disease where the protective cartilage that cushions the end of the bone starts to deteriorate. It usually occurs in the knee but may also occur in the hands, hip, and spine. When this cartilage completely wears off, the bones rub against each other, causing pain, stiffness, loss of flexibility, grating sensation, bone spur, and swelling.

This medication functions the same as natural hyaluronic acid but in a much concentrated and stabilized form to help resist degradation and extended stay in the joint, providing more prolonged effects. It increases the level of the healthy hyaluronic acid in the affected joint, providing relief, increased lubrication, and acts as a shock absorber. It is a one-shot injection with a long-lasting effect for up to 26 weeks, but note that patients with an infection in the knee should not be prescribed this medication. This is prescribed when other topical, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy, and corticosteroids do not work well.

Your Durolane dosage is based on the patient’s medical condition, other medicines, and response to the treatment. It is a gel administered via injection containing 60mg/3ml; injected directly in the affected joint once, lasting for up to 6 months. A health care professional will be the one to inject this medicine in a procedure that usually lasts within 30 minutes; anesthesia will be used to reduce discomfort, and the knee will be bandaged at the end of the process.

Recovery after Durolane Injection

After the process of administration, mild pain in the injected area will be experienced within 48 hours; headache and joint stiffness may also occur. Your doctor may recommend an ice pack for the injected area and an analgesic to ease discomfort. Avoid strenuous activities like jogging and high-impact sports for at least 48 hours. Ask your doctor how long you will wait before you can resume weight-bearing activities and when you will be allowed to stand longer than an hour.

Injected area may feel warm, painful, red, or puffed – Nausea, stomach pain, troubled walking, swelling of the hands or feet, back pain, numbness, headache, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle pain are the common side effects of this medication; if any persists or worsens, tell your doctor. Take note that the Durolane side effects listed here are not the complete list.

Call your doctor if severe pain and swelling around the knees injected is experienced. Get medical help once allergic reactions occur, such as hives, trouble breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Durolane vs Euflexxa

Both medications are injectable hyaluronate acid treating symptoms of osteoarthritis. Durolane is a concentrated hyaluronate injected once lasting the relief up to 26 weeks. In contrast, Euflexxa is purified and bioengineered from a not immunogenic bacteria; it has a two-step process such as draining the excess fluid before injecting and joint lubrication called arthrocentesis plus viscosupplementation, which is administered three times with a week interval for each process to attain relief up to six months.

Durolane vs Synvisc

These medications are administered via injection to relieve pain in osteoarthritis. Durolane is viscoelastic single-injection hyaluronic acid with a long-lasting effect up to 26 weeks. Synvisc is an intra-articular agent administered three times with an interval of one week each session to attain the full benefits within six months.

A doctor may need to remove excess fluid in the joint before injecting Synvisc. Synvisc is made from chicken combs and is not advised to patients with poultry or egg allergies; Synvisc has another version called Synvisc one that is administered one time only like Durolane, but Durolane provides a more significant reduction of pain than Synvisc.

Monovisc vs Durolane

Both medications are hyaluronan; Durolane is highly concentrated, while Monovisc is made from bacterial fermentation. They are both administered once with a six-month effect, but Monovisc can be injected more than once at a one-week interval after the first injection.
