Description

What is Estrace

Estradiol is the active ingredient of Estrace, an estrogen derivative that replaces the missing estrogen in the body due to menopausal or other conditions. Estrogen contributes to different body functions such as reproduction, cognitive, bones, cardiovascular, and other essential bodily processes; low estrogen levels may result in various health problems. This medicine is usually prescribed to reduce symptoms of menopausal such as hot flashes (sudden heat on face and chest), vaginal dryness and prevent bone loss or osteoporosis.

Estradiol is a hormone replacement therapy that relieves vasomotor symptoms and improves bone density by preventing bone resorption. Estrace is also used in treating advanced cancer of the breast called metastatic by preventing the activation of cancer cell growth.

Estrace Dosing

Before starting Estrace, read the drug information on the leaflet and ensure to tell your doctor all other medications you are taking to avoid drug interaction. Estrace dosage generic is just the same as the branded efficacy and safety but is more affordable. The dose is prescribed at the lowest and is gradually decreased; the amount is based on the medical condition and response to the treatment. It is available in tablet form in strengths of 0.5mg, 1mg, and 2mg taken without regard to food; however, you may take it with food if a stomach upset occurs. It should be taken regularly at the same time of the day daily to attain the best result; if a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered, but if it is almost the time for the following intake schedule, skip the missed dose for double dosing is discouraged.

The usual prescription is 1mg to 2mg daily for three weeks, followed by a one-week off; a doctor will check on you to see if the treatment should be continued or not. In breast cancer treatment, 10mg thrice a day for three months is prescribed, while for prevention of bone loss, 0.5mg once a day is given for a certain period.

Estrace Side Effects

Weight changes, headache, breast tenderness, bloating, vomiting, nausea, and upset stomach are the common side effects of estradiol; call your doctor for medical advice about these side effects if any persist or worsen. Please keep in mind that the negative effects described here are not exhaustive.

Serious side effects may also occur; report side effects that are experienced listed below:

  • Mood changes
  • Breast lumps
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Increased or new vaginal irritation
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Persistent nausea or vomiting
  • Yellowing (eyes or skin)
  • Swelling (hands, ankles, or feet)
  • Increased thirst or urination

In the event you experience any of the following symptoms, you should seek immediate medical attention: severe allergic reaction, blood clots, weakness on one side of the body, unusual sweating, pain (chest, jaw, or left arm), severe headache, troubled speaking, troubled breathing, coughing up blood, sudden dizziness, or fainting, and vision changes.

Patients with hypocalcemia should use Estrace with caution or a high calcium level in the blood. It can also increase your risk of vascular events; watch out for signs of stroke, myocardial infarction, venous thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism. A limited number of case reports also indicate symptoms of a blood pressure elevation caused by idiosyncratic estrogen responses.

Estrace vs Premarin

Both medicines treat symptoms of menopausal; they are similar, yet not precisely the same. They are used in the same conditions, but atrophic vaginitis, kraurosis vulvas, and moderate to severe dyspareunia are off-label use for Estrace. Premarin is available only as a brand name containing conjugated estrogen in cream, tablet, and injection form, while Estrace is a brand name with a much affordable generic; it contains estradiol and is available in cream and tablet form. They are both equally effective; your healthcare provider will help you which medication is better for your condition.
