Description

What is Exforge?

Exforge is a combination of two active drugs called amlodipine and valsartan; it is used to control hypertension. Both drugs work to relax and widen blood vessels, but in different ways; amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that blocks calcium into the cells of the heart and blood vessels, while valsartan is an ARB’s angiotensin receptor blocker that blocks angiotensin II from narrowing blood vessels.

Hypertension increases pressure in the blood, which causes an additional workload for the heart and affects blood vessels in the heart, brain, and kidney in the long run. Exforge works by relaxing blood vessels and muscles in the heart to increase the supply of blood and oxygen to decrease the risk of other medical problems.

Exforge Dosage

Exforge is a prescription medicine based on the patient’s medical condition, other medication, and response to treatment. It is available in strengths of 5/80mg, 5/160mg, 5/320mg, 10/160mg, and 10/320mg and is taken once a day with or without food intake. The recommended dose prescribed starts at 5/80mg and can be increased after two weeks without exceeding 10/320mg; it may be prescribed together with other medication. Regular use will help get the most benefit if it, take this medicine at the same time of the day daily. In case of missing a dose, take it as soon as remembered, but if it is almost the time for the next intake of a dose, skip it and proceed to the following intake schedule for double dosing is discouraged.

Patients with high blood pressure that is not adequately controlled by valsartan or amlodipine alone are prescribed by Exforge 10/160mg. Dose titration is recommended before changing to fix a dose combination like this one. Titration is the increasing of the dose every couple of weeks until the maximum adequate amount is achieved.
