What Is Geodon Used For 

Geodon medication decreases hallucination and helps think more clearly and positively, feel less agitated, and take a more active part in daily life in people with schizophrenia and acute agitation with schizophrenia. It can also treat manic symptoms of bipolar disorder in children ages ten and above.  

Ziprasidone is Geodon generic name; it is also the active ingredient of this medication, which belongs to the atypical antipsychotic class. It changes dopamine and serotonin levels to help restore the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain to improve mood, thinking, and behavior. This medication treatment can be prescribed alone or with other medicines, still, it is not recommended in patients with a heart rhythm disorder, Qt prolongation, untreated heart failure, recent heart attack, especially in elderly with dementia-related psychosis, due to an increased risk of death. 

Geodon Dosage 

Before taking Geodon, read the necessary information on the medicine leaflet and inform your health care provider about all other medicines you are taking to avoid drug interactions. This medication is available in capsule form in strengths of 20 mg, 40 mg, 60 mg, and 80 mg, which should be swallowed whole, not opened, crushed, or chewed. This medication is prescribed at the lowest dose and is gradually increased to lower the risks of side effects; it should be taken with food and is given twice a day.  

The usual prescription for schizophrenia is 20 m twice a day, which can be adjusted based on the individual clinical status up to 80 mg twice a day; adjustments should be made, if indicated, not less than two days for steady-state is achieved within one to three days. 

 For bipolar treatment, 40 mg twice a day is prescribed, which can be adjusted to 80 mg twice a day. Intramuscular dosing is usually 10 mg to 20 mg with 40 mg total daily dose. 10 mg can be given every two hours, while 20 mg can be given every four hours.  

Intramuscular dosing is prescribed for the short-term only; if long-term is indicated, switching on the oral capsules is recommended. Take Geodon regularly at the same time of the day daily to help attain the best results; if a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered, but if it is almost near the time for the following intake schedule, skip the missed dose for double dosing is discouraged.
