Indications

Lanacane cream is a medicated cream that provides relief from minor skin irritations, insect bites, stings, chafing, and other sources of discomfort. It has a cooling and anesthetic effect that soothes itching and irritation, stops the urge to scratch, and forms a protective film over raw and inflamed tissue.

Lanacane cream is commonly used as a first aid treatment for minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. It contains benzocaine, which acts as a topical anesthetic, temporarily reducing itching and minor pain. Some Lanacane products also have an anti-bacterial effect and contain benzethonium chloride as an active ingredient.

Use and Dosage

If you are using the over-the-counter product to self-treat, read and follow all directions on the product package before using this medication. If you have any questions, consult your pharmacist. If your doctor has prescribed this medication, use it as directed.

Before using it on the skin, clean and dry the affected area as directed. Apply a thin layer of medication to the affected area of the skin, usually 2 to 3 times a day or as directed.

If you are using the spray, shake the canister well before using it. While holding the canister 3-5 inches (8-13 centimeters) from the affected area, spray until wet. If the affected area is on the face, spray the medication onto your hand and apply it to the face. Do not spray near your eyes, nose, or mouth.

If you are using the foam, shake the canister well before using it. Spray the foam onto your hand and apply it to the affected area.

Do not use it on large areas of the body, cover the area with waterproof bandages or plastic, or apply heat unless directed to do so by your doctor. These may increase the risk of serious side effects.

Wash your hands immediately after use unless you are treating an area on the hands. Avoid getting the product in the eyes, nose, or ears. If the medication gets in these areas, rinse the area immediately with clean water.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not use more of this product, use it more often, or keep using it longer than directed. If there is an infection or sore in the area to be treated, do not use this medication without consulting your doctor first.

If your condition lasts or gets worse, or if you think you may have a serious medical problem, get medical help right away.

Side Effects

Lanacane should not be used in the mouth. Other products containing benzocaine are used in the mouth and may cause a condition in which the oxygen in your body tissues can become dangerously low. This is a potentially fatal condition called methemoglobinemia (met-HEEM-oh glo-bin-EE-mee-a). This condition may occur after only one use of benzocaine or after several uses.

Signs and symptoms may occur within minutes or up to 2 hours after using benzocaine in the mouth or throat. Get emergency medical help if you have:

  • A headache, tiredness, or confusion
  • Fast heartbeats
  • Feeling light-headed or short of breath
  • The pale, blue, or gray appearance of your skin, lips, or fingernails

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Lanacane: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using Lanacane and call your doctor at once if you have:

  • Severe burning, stinging, or sensitivity where the medicine is applied
  • Swelling, warmth, or redness
  • Oozing, blistering, or any signs of infection

Common Lanacane side effects may include:

  • Mild stinging, burning, or itching where the medicine is applied
  • Skin tenderness or redness
  • Dry white flakes where the medicine was applied

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur.
