Indications

Lovenox is an anticoagulant medication used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) blood clots in those who have undergone certain types of surgeries or who are bedridden from a prolonged illness. This medication also helps prevent blood vessel complications in those with chest pain or who have had a heart attack.

Enoxaparin sodium is a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) that helps manage venous and arterial thromboembolic disorders by inhibiting thrombin and factor-Xa, both of which affect your blood flow.

This blood clot medication has been shown to be more effective at treating unstable angina and myocardial infraction than unfractionated heparin medicines. Lovenox also has a low incidence of adverse events and is generally well-tolerated in a wide range of patient groups.

Uses and Dosage

The prescription of Lovenox will vary depending on the individual and condition being treated. Always follow your doctor’s instruction and read packaging labels carefully when using new medication, especially when giving yourself at-home injections.

  • Prepare daily injections only when ready to give them
  • Sit or lie down for the injection
  • Avoid injecting Lovenox into muscles
  • Inject this medication in different places each time
  • Do not inject in the same location twice in a row
  • Your doctor will instruct you in how and where to inject Lovenox
  • Most adults with deep vein thrombosis take 1mg/kg every 12 hours
  • Adults with unstable angina or myocardial infraction usually take 1mg/kg every 12 hours
  • Adults should not take more than 325mg each day
  • Each prefilled syringe is designed for one use only; throw them away after use
  • Place used syringes into a puncture-proof sharps container
  • Store syringes at room temperature away from moisture and heat

Side Effects

Lovenox may cause some side effects to develop while it thins your blood to prevent clots. Speak with your doctor to discover more specific information regarding symptoms you may encounter when taking enoxaparin sodium.

Common Lovenox side effects:

  • Nausea, diarrhea
  • Anemia
  • Confusion
  • Pain, bruising, redness, or irritation around injection site

Serious Side Effects

Some more serious side effects may occur when taking Lovenox. Stop using this medication and call your doctor right away if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Unusual bleeding, any uncontrollable bleeding
  • Easy bruising, purple or red spots under your skin
  • Nosebleeds, bleeding gums
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding, bloody urine or stools
  • Coughing blood, vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Signs of brain bleeding (sudden weakness especially on one side of the body, sudden severe headache, problems with speech or vision)
  • Low red blood cell count (pale skin, unusual tiredness, feeling light-headed, shortness of breath, cold hands and feet)

Enoxaparin may lead to the development of a spinal cord blood clot. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop back pain, numbness or muscle weakness in your lower body, or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Allergic Reactions

Do not take Lovenox if you are allergic to enoxaparin, heparin, benzyl alcohol, or pork products. If you develop signs of an allergic reaction while using this medication, stop taking it and contact your doctor right away.

Lovenox allergy symptoms may include:

  • Hives
  • Itching or burning skin
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat

Cautions

Do not use Lovenox if you are actively bleeding or have a low level of platelets in your blood after testing positive for an antibody while using enoxaparin.

Avoid participating in activities that increase your risk of injury or bleeding. Take extra care to prevent bleeding while shaving or brushing your teeth because enoxaparin can increase your risk for uncontrolled bleeding.

If you receive a spinal tap or spinal anesthesia while taking Lovenox, enoxaparin may cause a very serious blood clot to form around your spinal cord. The risk of this happening is higher if you have any of the following:

  • A spinal cord injury
  • A spinal catheter or one that was recently removed
  • History of spinal surgery or repeated spinal taps
  • Recently undergone a spinal tap or epidural anesthesia
  • If you frequently take aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • If you use a blood thinner or blood clot medication

Seek immediate medical attention if you develop symptoms of a spinal cord blood clot. These include back pain, lower body numbness or muscle weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control.

Lovenox can cause you to bleed more easily, especially if you have any of the following:

  • An inherited or disease-caused bleeding disorder
  • Hemorrhagic stroke
  • Bacterial endocarditis (infection of your heart lining)
  • Stomach or intestinal bleeding or ulcer
  • Recent brain, spine, or eye surgery

To ensure the safety of taking Lovenox, tell your doctor if you have ever had any of the following:

  • Bleeding disorder such as hemophilia
  • Kidney or liver disease
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Eye problems related to diabetes
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Low blood platelets after receiving heparin

Some other drugs may interact with enoxaparin and cause adverse effects. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including over the counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products, but especially those used to treat or prevent blood clots such as:

  • Abciximab, anagrelide, cilostazol, clopidogrel, dipyridamole
  • Alteplase, reteplase, tenecteplace, urokinase
  • Apixaban, argatroban, bivalirudin, dabigatran, rivaroxaban
  • heparin

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while taking this medication. If you have a mechanical heart valve and use Lovenox during pregnancy, ensure that your doctor is aware of this.

Breastfeeding while using Lovenox may not be safe. Consult with your doctor to learn about the risks.

FAQ

Does Lovenox dissolve blood clots?

Lovenox uses enoxaparin to inhibit proteins that contribute to blood clot formations. If you already have a clot when you start using this medication, it can help your body break it down while also helping prevent new ones from forming. Blood clot breakdowns can take anywhere from weeks to months.

How and where can Lovenox injections be given?

This anticoagulant medication comes available in prefilled syringes which you can use at home to inject in four main areas. These include the stomach (except for a 2-inch circumference around your navel) and waist but nowhere near your spine; top and outer thighs but not inner thighs or close to your knees; upper buttocks area, and the outer back of your upper arm. Your doctor will explain how and where to give yourself Lovenox injections.
