Tecfidera is an immunosuppressive medication used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis in adults.

Dimethyl fumarate is an immunosuppressant drug that affects a cellular pathway involved in your body’s response to oxidative stress. The medication may also inhibit the nicotinic acid receptor. These actions allow Tecfidera to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis such as clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease.

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Tecfidera that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual and multiple sclerosis condition being treated. Follow all your healthcare provider’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully to ensure the best results during treatment. Do not change your dose on your own.

  • Swallow capsule whole
  • Take with or without food
  • Take twice a day at the same times each day
  • Keep Tecfidera capsules in their original container
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

To treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis:

  • Most adults start by taking 120mg twice daily for 7 days
  • After 7 days, doses should increase to 240mg twice a day
  • Continue treatment for the entire length of time prescribed

Side Effects

Tecfidera may cause some side effects to develop. Speak with your healthcare provider to learn more about any symptoms that you may have during treatment.

Common Tecfidera side effects:

  • Stomach pain, indigestion
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Redness, rash, itching
  • Warm feeling or tingling

Serious Side Effects

Some more serious adverse reactions may occur when taking Tecfidera. Stop using this medication and contact your healthcare provider if you develop any of the following symptoms:

  • Symptoms of herpes virus (flu-like symptoms, cold sores around your mouth, tingling or painful blistering rash, burning pain in your thigh or lower back)
  • Low white blood cell counts (fever, mouth sores, skin sores, sore throat, cough, difficulty breathing)
  • Liver problems (decreased appetite, stomach pain, tiredness, itching, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, jaundice)

Allergic Reactions

Do not take Tecfidera if you are allergic to dimethyl fumarate or any of the other capsule ingredients. If you notice signs of an allergic reaction, stop using this medication and call your healthcare provider.

Tecfidera allergy symptoms may include:

  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat

To ensure your safety when taking Tecfidera, tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had any of the following:

  • Low white blood cell counts
  • Active infection

Tecfidera may cause you to develop a serious viral brain infection that may lead to disability or death. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you notice any changes in your mental state, vision, or if you have weakness in one side of your body and problems walking or talking. These symptoms may appear gradual and worsen quickly.

Tecfidera suppresses your immune system which leaves you more vulnerable to developing infections including herpes zoster and other serious infections.

Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plant to become pregnant during treatment. It is unclear how Tecfidera will affect an unborn baby.

It is not clear whether Tecfidera passes into breastmilk or not. Consult with your healthcare provider before breastfeeding while taking this medication.

Some drugs may interact with Tecfidera and cause adverse reactions. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including over the counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

Tecfidera is not an approved form of treatment in anyone under the age of 18.

Can you drink alcohol while taking Tecfidera?

You should avoid drinking alcohol, especially strong forms and in large quantities for at least an hour after taking your Tecfidera dose. It should be safe to drink low quantities occasionally, such as a glass of wine with a meal. Tecfidera can cause some harm to your liver which could be exacerbated if you drink large amounts of alcohol.

How long can you stay on Tecfidera?

Tecfidera treatment can continue for as long as needed to achieve beneficial results in treating relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis. Most adults start treatment with a lower dose for one week followed by a maintenance dose for as long as is required. If you experience severe reactions that are not tolerable, your healthcare provider may decide to end treatment.
