What is Vemlidy

Vemlidy (tenofovir alafenamide) belongs to the NRTI nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors; they enter the DNA of the hepatitis b virus HBV and pretend to be DNA to stop the viral replication process. This medicine is used to treat patients with chronic hepatitis B infection compensated (no symptoms) with liver disease and HIV infection. Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection caused by the Hepatitis b virus, it is considered chronic when the condition lasts more than six months; having this infection causes a high risk of developing liver problems such as failure, cancer, or cirrhosis. This medication works in these conditions by lowering the amount of the virus in the body and improving the condition of the liver.

Vemlidy Dosing

This medication is a prescription drug, the dose is based on the medical condition, other taken medicines, and response to the treatment. Before the start of medication, you will be tested by a doctor for an HIV infection, if you are positive for the infection and have a chronic hepatitis b virus, you will be given other medication to treat the condition.

This medicine is available in a 25mg tablet taken once daily with food; it should be taken at the same time of the day daily to help attain the benefits. If you vomit within an hour of intake, take another dose, but if you vomit after one hour, do not take another dose and wait until it’s the time for the next intake. A missed dose within 18 hours can be taken as soon as remembered, but if it is beyond 18 hours, skip the missed dose for double dosing is discouraged.

Vemlidy Comparison

Viread vs Vemlidy – both medicines are used in the treatment of chronic hepatitis but contain a different active ingredient which is Vemlidy tenofovir alafenamide and Viread tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. Tenofovir alfanamide is indicated for ages 18 and above in 25 mg tablets taken once a day with food. In contrast, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate TDF is indicated for pediatrics ages 12 and above and adults, it is usually taken at 300mg once a day without regard to food. This medication is safe for kidneys and bones but can cause high cholesterol than Viread. Vemlidy has shown greater plasma stability than Viread and is more efficient in delivering the active ingredient.

Vemlidy vs Entecavir

Both medicines are antiviral medications, tenofovir is indicted for chronic hepatitis B virus infection compensated with liver disease, while Entecavir is indicated in conditions with evidence of active viral replication and either evidence of persistent elevation in aminotransferase; it is also used to prevent reinfection after a liver transplant. Entecavir is available in a tablet and liquid form indicated for patients from 2 years old and above. 0.5mg or 1mg is taken on an empty stomach, 2 hours before or after a meal, while Vemlidy is taken on 25mg with food. Vemlidy is more expensive than Ectecavir but it is the first choice in treating hepatitis b.
