Zovirax is an antiviral medication used to treat cold sores on your lips and face caused by the Herpes simplex virus infection.

Acyclovir is an antiviral that inhibits DNA replication of the herpes virus to prevent the growth and spread of these viral cells. Thanks to these actions on herpes cells, Zovirax cream reduces the severity and duration of cold sore symptoms.

Follow all instructions provided by your healthcare provider for the best results during treatment. Do not use more or less of this cream than prescribed for any other length of time than directed.

  • Wash hands before and after use
  • Apply a thin layer of Zovirax cream to affected areas, including the outer edge of cold sore blisters
  • Use the cream 5 times each day, every 4 hours except for in the middle of the night
  • You should start using Zovirax as soon as cold sore symptoms appear
  • Patients should not use Zovirax longer than 4 consecutive days
  • Avoid rubbing cold sores or touching them with a towel to avoid aggravation

  • For external use only, avoid contact with your eyes, nose, or mouth
  • Tell your healthcare provider if symptoms do not improve after 4 days of treatment
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

What happens if you put too much Zovirax cream on?

Applying too much Zovirax cream should not cause serious harm, but it may increase your risk of developing a skin reaction or discomfort. However, if you consistently apply too much or apply some cream to the inside of your mouth, nose, or in your eyes, your body may absorb too much which can lead to more side effects. Follow your healthcare provider’s directions for the best results.

Should you use Zovirax overnight?

Zovirax cream is recommended to be applied five times a day in intervals of 4 hours, except for while you are sleeping. Therefore, you can apply the cream before going to bed and leave it to absorb overnight, but you do not need to worry about waking in the middle of the night to apply more. Speak with your healthcare provider to determine an applicatin regimen that works best for you.
