Drug Description :

Indication : Aldara (Imiquimod) is a medication used to treat superficial basal cell carcinoma (a minor form of skin cancer) in patients who can not have surgery as an appropriate treatment. This medication can also be used to treat a condition caused by too much sun exposure on the face and scalp, also known as actinic keratosis, and is also prescribed to treat genital warts outside of the body. It does not cure genital warts.

Storage : Store at room temperature. Keep away from moisture, heat, children and pets. Do not open the packet until you are ready to use the medication.

General Information :

Precaution : Before taking Aldara (Imiquimod), inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or breastfeeding; if you are taking prescription or over the counter medication, herbal preparation, or dietary supplements; if you have graft-versus-host disease, or if you have recently received cord blood transplant or bone marrow transplant.

Warnings : When taking Aldara cream avoid sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds) because the medication can make you feel more sensitive to sunlight resulting in sunburn. When you need to be out in the sun, wear a minimum of SPF 15 sunscreen with protective clothing. Aldara (Imiquimod) does not protect you against sexually transmitted disease such as clamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, trichomoniasis, herpes, or syphilis. Avoid sexual activity once you have applied on Aldara (Imiquimod) because this medication can weaken the rubber of condoms or diaphragms resulting in the condom or diaphragm breaking and an unplanned pregnancy.

Patient Family Information  : Read the directions on the prescription label. Do not take larger doses than prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication as directed on the label or by your pharmacist, doctor, or other healthcare provider. Before using Aldara (Imiquimod), wash your hands and the skin area that needs to be treated. Let the skin dry for a minimum of 10 minutes before applying Aldara (Imiquimod). If the treated area of the skin is wounded, broken or burned, wait for the skin to heal before using Aldara (Imiquimod). Use Aldara (Imiquimod) 2 to 5 times a week for up to 16 weeks, or as directed by your doctor. If you are treating Actinic keratosis apply on Aldara (Imiquimod) twice a week with two days in between each treatment day. If you are treating Superficial basal cell carcinoma, apply Aldara (Imiquimod) 5 times a week. If you are treating Genital warts, apply Aldara (Imiquimod) 3 times a week with 1 day inbetween each treatment day. Use one packet of the cream on the treatment area (maximum treatment area of 2 inch square). Rub on the cream until it disappears. Before going to bed, apply on Aldara (Imiquimod) and leave the medication on for 8 hours before washing it off with water and mild soap in the morning. When treating genital warts, do not cover the treated area with any bandages and avoid nylon underwear. Wear cotton gauze or underwear instead.

Contraindication : Do not use Aldara (Imiquimod) if you have broken, wounded, or burned skin.

Sever Side Effects : Severe: Severe allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, throat, lips, or tongue, or hives; Severe skin reaction including burning, bleeding, oozing, itching, and skin changes where the medication has been applied.

Common Side Effects : Common: Changes in the color of treated skin; runny or stuffy nose, cough, sore throat; diarrhea, upset stomach; fever, chills, body aches, swollen glands, flu symptoms; headache, back ache, muscle pain; or mild skin irritation, flaking, redness, dryness, scabbing, or hardening of the skin where the medicine was applied.
