Drixoral Decongestant Nasal Spray, which contains the active ingredient oxymetazoline hydrochloride, is an over-the-counter medication used for the relief of nasal congestion caused by various conditions, including:

Use and Dosage

The recommended dose of oxymetazoline nasal spray for adults and children over 12 years of age is 2 or 3 sprays into each nostril every 12 hours, as needed. Do not exceed the recommended dosage on the product label. Rinse the spray tip in hot water after each use.

If your symptoms continue after 3 days of using this medication, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Using this product for longer than 3 days can cause an increase in nasal congestion.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor or pharmacist has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor or pharmacist.

Side Effects

  • Chest pain, fast or uneven heart rate
  • Severe headache, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, confusion, or feeling short of breath

Common side effects of oxymetazoline nasal may include:

  • Mild burning or stinging of the nose
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose

What happens if I miss a dose?

Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.

Seek emergency medical attention if anyone has accidentally swallowed the medication.

Keep oxymetazoline nasal out of the reach of children. Certain nasal medications can cause serious medical problems in a young child who accidentally sucks on or swallows medicine from the nasal spray bottle.

What should I avoid while using oxymetazoline nasal?

What other drugs will affect oxymetazoline nasal?

  • Antidepressants–amitriptyline, clomipramine, desipramine, doxepin, imipramine, nortriptyline
  • Ergot medicines–ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, ergonovine, methylergonovine
  • MAO inhibitors–isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine
