Indications

Nexgard is a flea medication used to treat and prevent flea and tick infestations in dogs and puppies 8 weeks or older.

Afoxolaner is an isoxazoline drug that blocks pre- and post-synaptic transfer of chloride ions in cell membranes while also selectively inhibiting insects at a binding site. These inhibitory actions allow Nexgard treatment to kill insects and acarines that cause infestations.

This flea and tick medication is quickly absorbed and has shown to start killing insects within four hours of initial doses. Thanks to these absorption rates, Nexgard is an effective treatment for canine insect infestations that is only required once a month.

Uses and Dosage

The dose of Nexgard prescribed will vary depending on the size of your dog and their response to the medication. Follow all your veterinarian’s directions and read packaging labels carefully.

  • Administer with or without food
  • Ensure your dog consumes the complete chewable tablet
  • Monitor your treated dog for a few minutes to ensure the dose is not lost or refused
  • If you miss administering a dose, give one as soon as possible and resume monthly dosing
  • Monthly treatment should continue year-round in places where fleas are common
  • Most dogs need only one chewable tablet per month
  • To limit reinfestation, treat all animals within your household with a flea control product

FAQ

How old does my dog have to be to take Nexgard?

You can safely treat your dog with Nexgard if they are 8 weeks old or older and if they weigh 4 or more pounds. The chewable afoxolaner tablet doses are prescribed by weight and can be used as monthly preventative medicine as well as treatment for existing infestations.

How long should I wait to bathe my dog after giving Nexgard?

You can bathe your dog immediately after giving them Nexgard because the medication is taken orally. The chewable medication blocks binding spots to kill off insects like fleas and ticks without needing to use other topical methods that would impede bathing or swimming schedules.
