How does Rybelsus work

Semaglutide is the active ingredient of Rybelsus that belongs to the class of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor GLP1; it mimics the function of the naturally produced incretin in the body to help control your blood sugar levels. Incretins are gut peptide hormones that are secreted when food is taken; they are the ones that stimulate insulin to respond to a high level of blood glucose levels. This medication is adjunct with proper diet and exercise to improve the blood sugar level of adults with type 2 diabetes; a condition where the insulin produced by the pancreas is not recognized by the body causing high blood sugar levels.

This medication stimulates the release of incretin to raise the concentration of insulin to regulate blood sugar. Semaglutide is usually prescribed after a failed treatment of type 2 diabetes on other medication. This medication is not recommended to be used by patients with type 1 diabetes, thyroid cancer, multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome, insulin-dependent, or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Rybelsus Dosing

This medication is a prescription drug based on the patient’s medical condition and response to the treatment; inform your doctor of all other medications you are taking to avoid drug interactions. Rybelsus 3 mg, 7 mg, and 14 mg are in tablet forms, which should be swallowed whole, not cut, crushed, or chewed. It should be taken once a day first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, take it 30 minutes before taking any food and drinks aside from the water to drink on administration which should not be more than four ounces. Regular use of this medication at the same time of the day will help attain the benefits, if a dose is missed, waiting for the next intake schedule for double dosing is discouraged.

The usual prescription is 3 mg once a day for 30 days, followed by 7mg once a day for 30 days; depending on the glycemic control, the dose can be adjusted to 14mg once a day. The maintenance dose is 7 mg to 14 mg once a day, but taking two tablets of 7 mg to attain a 14 mg dose is not recommended.

Rybelsus Comparisons

Rybelsus vs Metformin – Both medications are used in regulating blood sugar levels of type 2 diabetes, Rybelsus is not recommended for ages below 18, but metformin is approved to be used in 10 years old and above. Rybelsus is available in tablet form taken once daily, while metformin comes in three forms such as oral solution, tablet, and extended-release tablet taken once or twice a day. Both medications are effective if accompanied by proper diet and exercise, but many patients use Metformin for it is more affordable than Rybelsus for metformin has a generic version.
