Indications

Rybelsus is a blood sugar medication used to manage type 2 diabetes.

Semaglutide is a long-acting glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) that helps balance and control blood sugar levels. The medication does this by increasing insulin production while reducing the secretion of glucagon.

When used alongside diet and exercise, Rybelsus helps improve glycemic control, blood pressure, lipids, beta-cell function, and cardiovascular outcomes. The medication also stimulates receptors in the central nervous system that can produce a weight loss effect, but Rybelsus is not an approved weight loss drug.

Cautions

Rybelsus does not treat type 1 diabetes.

Before using Rybelsus, tell your doctor if you have multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, insulin-dependent diabetes, or diabetic ketoacidosis. Semaglutide could aggravate these conditions.

Semaglutide has led to thyroid tumors or cancer in animals; it is unknown whether this will occur in people. Call your doctor immediately if you notice signs which include swelling or a lump in your neck, trouble swallowing, a hoarse voice, or shortness of breath.

To ensure the safety of taking Rybelsus, tell your doctor if you have any of the following:

  • Stomach or intestinal disorder
  • Pancreatitis
  • Kidney disease
  • Eye problems caused by diabetes

Some medications may interact with semaglutide including over the counter medicine, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, but especially insulin or other diabetes medicines like dulaglutide, exenatide, liraglutide, and others.

When taking Rybelsus, your digestion may slow which can make it harder for your body to absorb other medications taken by mouth.

Rybelsus is not an approved treatment for anyone under the age of 18.

Managing diabetes is extremely important during pregnancy, but so is ensuring you gain the right amount of weight. Talk with your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Stop taking Rybelsus at least 2 months before you plan to get pregnant.

Do not breastfeed while taking Rybelsus.
