Videx EC (Didanosine Delayed-Release Capsules) is a medication used in the treatment of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection. It belongs to the class of medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).

Use and Dosage

Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start using didanosine and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication by mouth on an empty stomach (at least 1 and 1/2 hours before or 2 hours after a meal) as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. Swallow the capsules whole. Do not crush, chew, or open the capsules. Doing so may decrease their effectiveness.

The dosage is based on your weight, medical condition, and response to treatment.

It is very important to continue taking this medication (and other HIV medications) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not skip any doses. Do not increase your dose, take this drug more often than prescribed, or stop taking it (or other HIV medicines) even for a short time unless directed to do so by your doctor. Skipping or changing your dose without approval from your doctor may cause the amount of virus to increase, make the infection more difficult to treat (resistant), or worsen side effects.

For the best effect, take this medication at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time every day.

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Mild symptoms of lactic acidosis may worsen over time, and this condition can be fatal. Get emergency medical help if you have: unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain, vomiting, irregular heart rate, dizziness, feeling cold, or feeling very weak or tire

Serious side effects include:

  • Numbness, tingling, or pain in your hands or feet
  • Bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Vision changes
  • Signs of liver or pancreas problems–loss of appetite, upper stomach pain (that may spread to your back), nausea or vomiting, fast heart rate, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Videx EC affects your immune system, which may cause certain side effects (even weeks or months after you have taken Videx EC). Tell your doctor if you have:

  • Signs of a new infection–fever, night sweats, swollen glands, cold sores, cough, wheezing, diarrhea, weight loss
  • Trouble speaking or swallowing, problems with balance or eye movement, weakness, or prickly feeling
  • Swelling in your neck or throat (enlarged thyroid), menstrual changes, impotence

Common side effects of Videx EC may include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain
  • Rash
  • Headache
  • Changes in the shape or location of body fat (especially in your arms, legs, face, neck, breasts, and waist)

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur.

  • Before taking didanosine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: pancreatitis, kidney problems, liver problems (such as hepatitis, cirrhosis), nerve problems (such as peripheral neuropathy), alcohol use, high fat levels in the blood (triglycerides), gall bladder problems (such as gall stones), gout.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages because they may increase your risk for liver problems and pancreatitis.
  • Didanosine may increase your risk of a heart attack. Discuss the risks and benefits of treatment with your doctor and ways to lower your risk of heart disease. Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, if you smoke, or if you have other conditions that increase your risk of heart disease such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol levels.
  • Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
  • Older adults may be at greater risk for pancreatitis while using this drug.
  • During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Treatment can lower the risk of passing HIV infection to your baby, and didanosine may be part of that treatment. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Because breast milk may transmit HIV, consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
