How Does Xiidra Work

A doctor prescribes Xiidra for dry eyes syndrome DED, a condition where the eyes do not produce enough aqueous liquids which act as a lubricant; different reasons may cause it, but it can lead to inflammations and damage on the eye’s surface.

Xiidra ingredients include lifitegrast, a lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA1) antagonist that inhibits the inflammatory cell binding to reduce inflammations. It can also help increase tear production and relieve symptoms of dry eye disease such as blurred vision, eye fatigue, redness, and itchiness.

Xiidra Dosing

Before using this eye drop, read the full prescribing information on the provided leaflet and inform your doctor about other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription supplements and herbal medicines to avoid drug interactions. This eye drop comes in a 5% strength and is usually prescribed to be used twice a day with 12 hours intervals; if you are using ointments for the eyes, use this eye drop first to allow the drop to enter the eyes. Wash your hands before opening the eye drop, do not touch the tip, and do not allow it to touch any surface to avoid contamination. Tilt your head upwards, pull down your eyelids and let a drop fall. Gently close the eyes, look down and gently put pressure in the corner of the eyes near the nose by placing a finger on it for at least one to two minutes before opening the eyes to prevent the medicine from draining. Repeat the steps if you are prescribed more than one drop a day.

To attain the best results, take lifitegrast at the same time of day daily; if a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible but if it is almost the time for the following use, skip the missed dose for double dosing is discouraged.

Xiidra Side Effects

Common side effects of Xiidra include eye irritation, discomfort, blurred vision that is temporary, unusual taste in the mouth, redness of the eyes, sinusitis, and watery eyes; if they persist or worsen, inform your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Take note that the side effects listed here are not a complete list.

No serious side effects have been reported with the use of this medication, but severe allergic reactions may be experienced; call your doctor right away if you have symptoms such a rash, itchiness, swelling, severe dizziness, and troubled breathing.

Xiidra and hair loss are always associated as well as dry mouth, but these two side effects should not be experienced while in this medication. If you are experiencing such side effects, you should inform your doctor to assess the cause and recommend a treatment.

Xiidra vs Restasis

Both medicines are prescription drugs that treat dry eyes; they are given twice a day and have similar side effects. Xiidra contains lifitegrast and is available as a single dose eye drop; it is a preservative-free liquid solution in 5 % strength. While Restasis has cyclosporine and is available as a single dose drop or a multi-dose bottle, it is a liquid emulsion in 0.05 strengths. Both medications are effective, but Restasis can be used as a long-term treatment, while Xiidra is recommended for three months of medication only; extended use up to 12 months above is not yet studied in clinical trials. However, Restasis may cause a burning sensation in the eyes, which is less experienced in Xiidra.
