Indications

Zithromax Z-Pak is an antibiotic medication used to treat various bacterial infections including respiratory, skin, ear, and sexually transmitted infections.

Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that binds to susceptible bacteria and inhibits the protein synthesis of the cells. This action allows Zithromax to treat various bacterial infections by preventing the growth and spread of infective cells. The drug continues fighting bacteria in the infection site for days after your last dose allowing for convenient treatment regimens.

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Zithromax that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual and severity of the infection being treated. Follow all your healthcare provider’s instructions for use and read packaging labels carefully for the best therapeutic results. Do not take any more or less than prescribed by your healthcare provider.

  • Swallow tablets whole
  • Take with or without food
  • Continue taking Zithromax Z-Pak for the entire length of time prescribed even if you feel better

  • Adults may be prescribed one of two treatment regimens for bacterial exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Adults can take 500mg once daily for 3 days or 500mg once on the first day followed by 250mg once daily on days 2 to 5.
  • Mild pneumonia and uncomplicated skin structure infections usually are treated by taking 500mg on the first day followed by 250mg for the next 5 days
  • Children with otitis media and community acquired pneumonia should take 10mg/kg on day one followed by 5mg/kg for days 2 to 5
  • Children with pharyngitis or tonsillitis should take 12mg/kg a day

To treat genitourinary infections:

  • Most adults take 1000mg of Zithromax to treat genital ulcer disease and non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis
  • To treat urethritis and cervicitis due to a different strain, most adults take 2000mg

To prevent mycobacterium avium complex disease:

  • Adults should take 1200mg once a week

Side Effects

Zithromax Z-Pak may cause you to develop some side effects while affecting bacterial cells in your body. Talk with your healthcare provider for more information regarding any symptoms that you may experience during treatment.

Common Zithromax Z-Pak side effects:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea, stomach pain, vomiting
  • Headache

Older adults using Zithromax Z-Pak may be more likely to develop heart rhythm side effects, including a fast heart rate which can be life-threatening.

Serious Side Effects

Some more serious adverse effects may occur while you are taking Zithromax. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you develop any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe stomach pain, watery or bloody diarrhea
  • Fast or pounding heartbeats, fluttering in your chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sudden dizziness
  • Liver problems (nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, jaundice)

Call your healthcare provider immediately if a baby taking Ziac becomes irritable or vomits while eating or nursing.

Seem immediate medical attention if you develop a serious drug reaction. Symptoms include skin rash, fever, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms, muscle aches, severe weakness, unusual bruising, or jaundice.

Allergic Reactions

Do not take Zithromax if you are allergic to azithromycin or any similar antibiotics such as clarithromycin, erythromycin, or telithromycin. Stop using this medication and call your healthcare provider if you notice any of the following signs of an allergic reaction:

  • Hives
  • Trouble breathing
  • Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat

Cautions

  • Do not take Zithromax if you have ever had jaundice or problems with your liver after taking azithromycin.

  • It is unclear if this medicine passes into breastmilk or if it may cause harm to your nursing baby. Ask your healthcare provider before breastfeeding while taking Zithromax.
  • If you need to take an antacid that contains aluminum or magnesium, take it at least 2 hours before or after your Zithromax dose.
  • If you experience diarrhea that is bloody or watery, stop taking Zithromax and contact your healthcare provider. Do not use any anti-diarrhea medicines unless directed to do so by your healthcare provider.
  • Zithromax can make your skin more susceptible to being burned by sunlight. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun or artificial UV rays.
  • Some drugs may interact with Zithromax and cause adverse reactions. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including over the counter medicines, but especially any of the following:
    • Nelfinavir
    • A blood thinner such as warfarin
    • Cyclosporine
    • Certain antihistamines
  • Do not administer Zithromax to any child younger than 6 months old.
